“What a marvel! A corkscrew-twisty, knife-sharp thriller—yet it doubles as a tender ode to loss and longing. Prepare to be haunted.”—A. J. Finn, author of the New York Times bestseller The Woman in the Window “This enjoyably chilling suspense tale . . . conveys both the thrills and the dangers of being a teenager on the brink of adult independence. . . . The fascination of this story is in the character studies of the surviving children, all grown up now and participants in a dark mystery that they all wish had never seen the light of day.”—The New York Times Book Review“The mystery intrigues and twists, offering enough red herrings and moments of police procedural to please fans of the genre.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)“Neatly plotted and nicely atmospheric . . . This British import is plausible and eminently satisfying. Encore, please.”—Booklist“A dark, deep, terrific thriller and a scorching portrait of friendship and its betrayal.”—Nicci French, author of Day of the Dead “A superior crime book . . . I loved it.”—Marian Keyes, author of The Break“She Lies in Wait delivers on just about every level—a killer premise, an absorbing plot that twists and turns at just the right pace, and a lead detective who has hit the page fully formed and instantly likeable. One to watch!”—Caz Frear, author of Sweet Little Lies“Most enjoyable—Gytha Lodge is a skilled storyteller and she weaves such an intricate plot. The book hooked me early on and kept me up way past my bedtime for several nights! The team of detectives Lodge has put together is top notch. All in all, it’s a very satisfying read.”—James Oswald, author of The Gathering Dark“A stunner . . . well plotted, brilliant characters, beautifully written: a sure-fire hit.”—Jo Spain, author of The Confession Gytha Lodge studied English at Cambridge University and received an MA in creative writing from the University of East Anglia.

On a scorching July night in 1983, a group of teenagers goes camping in the forest. Bright and brilliant, they are destined for great things, and the youngest of the group—Aurora Jackson—is delighted to be allowed to tag along. The evening starts like any other—they drink, they dance, they fight, they kiss. Some of them slip off into the woods in pairs, others are left jealous and heartbroken. But by morning, Aurora has disappeared. Her friends claim that she was safe the last time they saw her, right before she went to sleep. An exhaustive investigation is launched, but no trace of the teenager is ever found.
Thirty years later, Aurora’s body is unearthed in a hideaway that only the six friends knew about, and Jonah Sheens is put in charge of solving the long-cold case. Back in 1983, as a young cop in their small town, he had known the teenagers—including Aurora—personally, even before taking part in the search. Now he’s determined to finally get to the truth of what happened that night. Sheens’s investigation brings the members of the camping party back to the forest, where they will be confronted once again with the events that left one of them dead, and all of them profoundly changed forever.
This searing, psychologically captivating novel marks the arrival of a dazzling new talent, and the start of a new series featuring Detective Chief Inspector Jonah Sheens.

Good read Book was very descriptive, good character development. It made me think about each character and feel what each was going through on that nightCaptivating, methodical police investigation An excellent, well-crafted mystery.I tend to lean towards thrillers, only occasionally wandering into pure 'mystery' territory, so perhaps I have not been exposed to a book of this type before. It was not what I expected. Having received it as a pre-release copy and not knowing anything except the title and a couple of sentences about the plot, I expected this to be more of a "cabin in the woods / killer run amuck" thriller. It is not.Except for a couple of brief fast-paced sections, this book is every bit as much about the police investigation itself, as it is about the central storyline. It is a nearly endless sequence of scenes in which the constable methodically questions the participants surrounding the murder, each time exposing a little more information - or ambiguity - into the bigger picture. What sets it apart from a typical old-school mystery is that I feel this reflected a real police investigation far better than the typical fictional investigation. Halfway through, I was beginning to question this format, feeling a bit of weariness of the repetitiousness of it, but something grabbed me and I held on until I could not put it down for the last quarter. As a fledgling mystery-thriller writer myself, I admire and respect how difficult it must have been to logically organize this book and keep everything cohesive. An impressive feat for sure. So, with the understanding that the middle can feel a bit slow and repetitive, and that it's not the slasher-thriller it may appear to be, I can heartily recommend this book to all lovers of mysteries or police procedurals. It's not really a complaint, but the only feedback I would have given had I been one of the editors - I wouldn't have made the crime take place so long ago (30 years) -OR- I would have added more story as to how the characters had evolved over so much time. Except for a few brief bits of background information, these characters, for the most-part seemed to behave and exist as if they were still in their late 20's and that only 10 years had passed. It didn't feel like there had been much real character progress and I had to keep reminding myself that these people were now in their late 40's. I couldn't help but wonder if the author kept forgetting that too. Some of the similar-sounding British police lingo (DCI, DCS, CID, CI) took a while for this non-British reader to get used to as well, and there was one recurring trivial character who had no conclusion and served no purpose, but that's all fairly trivial in the grand scheme of things. While I never felt much of a connection to, and never really liked, any of the characters (despite being the same age), I found them to be well-formed and interesting. I probably liked and empathized with the lead investigator, Jonah's, character the most, perhaps because he had matured the most. All in all, a well-crafted and captivating story.(editors - fix the typo in the final Acknowledgements :) )Language: medium+ (a couple of dozen f-word usages)Violence: lightSexual Content: nothing graphic, but rape was a common subjectDrugs: story revolved around a group of teens' drug cache and their youthful experimentation, but nothing graphic. You will like this I am sure that most will agree with me, likeable characters and plausible story line. An easy enjoyable read in my opinion.
