Cool book for Gamer parents to give to their kids My boy is going to love this particularly the part that explains the symbols on maps. We make various maps particularly with No Thank you Evil! But the maps will get a lot better with the guide. New monsters for him to discover and battle too.Hardcover and paper are great quality. For old AD&D players who remember how quickly Unearthed Arcana fell apart it is amazing how far things have come and how inexpensive the book is for the quality.My boy is also into Minecraft, Cat Quest, and Slay the Spire so our next games in 2020 will be quite a bit more mixed than before.Nothing but a 5E Advertisement for Adventure Modules Only two Dungeons...tombs not quite... this is basically a splat book for the 5E Adventure Modules that they have published. It should have been called "Lairs and Encounters". It would have been great if they talked about actual dungeon and dropped the name of the world they are found in. You would think that the Tomb of Horrors would be up there on the top 10 list.... there are hundred of tombs and dungeon from various worlds..... and it just so disappointing that this was just an AD. Also these are not young adult book... so quality of info should be there.

Lame and predictable, underdeveloped characters, sophmoric The book held my interest but only by a thread. I strongly disliked Abi, an insecure, fearful, controlling mother who virtually smothered her daughter Olivia. I found it quite insincere that Olivia did not resent being imprisoned by her mother's fears, especially as a teen. Abi held such an iron grip on Olivia that any normal person would rebel against such constraints. In my opinion Abi was a pathetic broken person who had no identity, no life, outside of being Olivia's mother. The whole relationship didn't ring true.That said, the story was unremarkable, no twists, no big reveal. The other characters were also unremarkable and stereotypical. The plot dragged at times and I found the descriptions to be distracting rather than complementary to the flow of the story. It's like she took a mental image of the backdrop, copied and pasted it into the text. Very stilted, awkward and repetitive. And the mourning......it goes on and on and on. We are reminded of Abi's grief constantly, on every page of every chapter. And how picture-perfect their relationship had been. Not one character really stood out, There was zero suspense The depressing theme of death and grief permeated the entire book interspersed w/half-baked love affairs which totally lacked emotional depth. In fact, the lack of emotion throughout was stark. Characters were only halfway drawn, writing style was choppy, I was easily distracted. I found this book very two-dimensional and cliche.Unputdownable I loved RECONSTRUCTING AMELIA, so when I read the blurb for THE NIGHT OLIVIA FELL, I hoped to enjoy it half as much. Christina McDonald exceeded my expectations with this compelling mystery.Did Olivia fall or was she pushed? The police seem to have decided to half-heartedly investigate what her mother Abi is certain is a crime. Brain dead, kept alive so her fetus can grow, the list of people who could have pushed Olivia is longer than Abi can imagine. The boyfriend? The secret boyfriend? The ex best friend? Her biological father? Her half sister? Or could THE NIGHT OLIVIA FELL truly have been an accident?You will be unable to resist this unputdownable book.A favorite thriller for 2019 The Night Olivia Fells opens with a scene of which no one wants to relate. The author kept a wide net cast when looking for the suspect. I would develop a theory, and then pan to the next potential perp as the story went along and red herrings were dangled.The Night Olivia Fell is so much more than the typical suspense story. While it has all the paramount trademarks, including secrets, lies, and formidable tension, it is in a league of its own with its intensely relatable characterization and raw emotion. You will love Abi and Olivia, and you will most definitely want to wrap your arms around each of them together, as you read their story and accept their individual fates as mother and daughter.I read this book as a group read, and this was the best kind of story to read together. We shared in the tension, the love for these characters, and the guessing game at just who was guilty at the center of it all.I read the book early with a complimentary copy; however, I preordered the book because I enjoyed it so much. A Long Treck Inland This novel is set in late nineteenth century Arizona Territory. There are a paltry number of instances in which Obreht's prose verges on poetry. The author leads the reader through the desiccated desert landscape and the difficulties of an arid lifestyle in that setting. These paltry instances are overshadowed by significant problems with the writing style of the novel. First, the events of the novel are repeated and overly described. Where was the editor with a sharpened pencil? Most of the chapters take at least an hour to complete. Less can be more and certainly the reader can grasp the setting and characters with more concise writing. Second, many words within the story are Spanish or Turkish. Some can be figured out from the context, but most definitions could not be found on the kindle dictionary. Why were these words used? The time frame of both of the main characters do not correspond. The life of Nora Lark, a pioneer wife, unfolds over a 24 hour period and Lourie Mattie, the other main character, is a Turkish orphan whose story flows from age 6 when he arrives in America to adulthood as a camel herder. When these two main characters meet in the final chapter, the encounter and its outcome make no sense at all. Fourth, both Nora and Lourie frequently have conversations with the dead. These conversations are two sided and ridiculous. Finally, nothing is resolved in the end about Nora's financial decision and the missing members of her family or why she has such a violent encounter with Lourie, whom she does not know at all. Nora's actions in the last chapter are out of character as the author has developed her thoughout the novel. Unfortunately, this book was a dense, difficult and disappointing read.Stunning writing, vivid and engulfing Weaving together the essence of a time in history and its characters in a stream of earthy and ethereal tales, it, after a few chapters, rises above almost any other fiction in technique and hard hitting effect. Not an easy read, but a glorious one.I'D GIVE IT 10 STARS IF I COULD! ★★★★★★★★★★ I grew up reading about the American West. I thrilled to the adventures of the cowboys and gunfighters and woodsmen and buckaroos, who, in my boyish fantasies, represented everything good about humankind: they were brave, strong, fearless, heroic, yet polite and good-hearted. My grandfather gave me a set of James Fenimore Cooper's "Leatherstocking Tales" when I was 9 or 10 and I immediately began reading every page, often after my folks thought I was asleep. When I was old enough to go downtown and discover used book stores, I bought and read a couple dozen, at least, classics by Zane Grey. On the radio I listened to Tom Mix (played by an actor named Curly Bradley) and Hopalong Cassidy. Cowpokes were my heroes; my late Uncle Reuben, whom I knew only from a photo of him aboard a horse, with a bandolero strung across his chest and shoulders, was my idol.So, to make a much longer story short, and keeping in mind that I am an old man, just a few months shy of 80, let me say that as I read "Inland," by Téa Obreht, I was stunned to realize that the fabled Great American Novel about the Great American West was not only mostly about a woman, it was written by a woman! Let me assure you that this was an epiphany, a wonderful, amazing discovery for this reader!There's no point in reiterating the two tales told by narrators whose stories finally, at the end of "Inland," intersect. Let me instead say that Obreht is more than a magnificent writer; she is among the very best American writers! She thinks like a shaman, she visualizes her dusty corner of Arizona like the best of our poets, she considers the human condition like a philosopher and she paints a portrait of Nora -- mother, wife, toiler on the small, hard-scrabble spread she shares with her family -- equal to any character portrayal by any author I've read! Nora's husband and two older sons are missing, gone on mysterious errands. Nora is left at home with her small son, Toby, her aged mother-in-law, an addled niece who's smarter than anyone thinks, and the ghost of a daughter who died years earlier. Let me say that the West, in :"Inland," as no doubt in real life, is populated by ghosts. The other narrator of "Inland" sees the ghosts, although they do not see each other. After reading this novel you'll never again feel completely alone, no matter how far you may find yourself out in the woods or on the desert sands!Have I heaped enough praise on "Inland"? If not, assume I am still heaping it on. This is more than a fine book, it's the best novel I've read in years.

Not far from them are Zion and Bryce Canyon – also glorious visions of what nature can offer but in a different way.Southern Utah is a place I feel fortunate to have spent so much time visiting. Reading through this book took me back to those days. If you know someone who has been gifting this to them will bring back their visit and remind them of that joy. Otherwise it could be a vicarious visit for you.I cannot say enough about how gorgeous this book is. I have picked it up so many times to just revisit a Park. Like Acadia in Maine. It’s been decades since we visited there and yet looking at the chapter reminded me of the glory of that trip in the early days of our marriage.This is a magnificent book on so many levels. From the photos to the vast amount of information presented about the National Park system. Great book. brief stories about inspirational, strong, smart people. Fight the bias :) I loved this. Bought a second one. Read it in one sitting so it's ready to give to a young girl to hopefully inspire her! It's just single page summaries of amazing women, highlighting their achievements and their struggles, which were absurd and horrible in some cases. Women these days fighting for equal opportunity etc: yes, great, please keep going, keep fighting and I'm with you (as a minority in my field), but some of you really need to stop whining and assuming every misfortune in your lives or set back is because of your gender. And please stop looking for ways to be offended! Don't assume the implications in people's words (lumped into "microaggressions") - ask them what they meant.And for goodness sakes, think about productive discussions instead, actionable discussions! Things don't change in history solelg because of whining. what we have these days is far better than what so many women faced throughout history, even recently.Sorry, got distracted. Lovely book. Cute pictures (for kids). Even in my thirties this was inspirational!I just hope the parents who help read this to youngens do a good job.Why do I feel uncomfortable gifting this to young boys though? The artwork is wonderful and the information is presented concisely but entertainingly. It's not an encyclopedia with an extremely detailed outline of each experiment conducted by each woman, but the information is fascinating and can inspire a young mind to investigate further.
