Title: The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared Pdf
Author: Jonas Jonasson
Published Date: 2012-09-11
Page: 400

Desperate to avoid his 100th birthday party, Allan Karlsson climbs out the window of his room at the nursing home and heads to the nearest bus station, intending to travel as far as his pocket money will take him. But a spur-of-the-moment decision to steal a suitcase from a fellow passenger sends Allan on a strange and unforeseen journey involving, among other things, some nasty criminals, a very large pile of cash, and an elephant named Sonya. It’s just another chapter in a life full of adventures for Allan, who has become entangled in the major events of the twentieth century, including the Spanish Civil War and the Manhattan Project. As Allan’s colorful and complex history merges with his present-day escapades, readers will be treated to a new and charmingly funny version of world history and get to know a very youthful old man whose global influence knows no age limit. An international best-seller, this is an engaging tale of one man’s life lived to the fullest. --Carol Gladstein "[A] witty caper. ***1/2"--People"[A] silly and wonderful novel. [The scenes] will just keep readers amused almost non-stop, and that's a feat few writers achieve. A great cure for the blues, especially for anyone who might feel bad about growing older."--Kirkus Reviews, Starred"The anti Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. . . Jonasson's lighthearted novel shows the softer side of Sweden. . . . hilarious."--Marie Claire"Scandi-crime's signature darkness is here dispelled by Allan Karlsson, the eponymous centenarian, who with unlikely sprightliness hops out of the window of his old people's home one afternoon . . . Fast-moving and relentlessly sunny . . . Like Allan, the plot is pleasingly nimble and the book's endearing charm offers a happy alternative to the more familiar Nordic noir."--The Guardian"[A] laugh-out-loud debut . . . Historical figures like Mao's third wife, Vice President Truman, and Stalin appear, to great comic effect. Other characters-most notably Albert Einstein's hapless half-brother-are cleverly spun into the raucous yarn, and all help drive this gentle lampoon of procedurals and thrillers."--Publishers Weekly, Starred"A mordantly funny and loopily freewheeling debut novel about ageing disgracefully."--The Sunday Times"Eccentric, unusual and far-fetched in the best possible way."--The Bookseller"This quirky novel is a sly, satirical look back at international relations in the 20th century through the eyes of an old man who has seen it all."--Library Journal"Imaginative, laugh-out-loud . . . a brilliant satire on the foibles of mankind."--The Telegraph

The international publishing sensation--over six million copies sold worldwide!

A reluctant centenarian much like Forrest Gump (if Gump were an explosives expert with a fondness for vodka) decides it's not too late to start over . . .

After a long and eventful life, Allan Karlsson ends up in a nursing home, believing it to be his last stop. The only problem is that he's still in good health, and in one day, he turns 100. A big celebration is in the works, but Allan really isn't interested (and he'd like a bit more control over his vodka consumption). So he decides to escape. He climbs out the window in his slippers and embarks on a hilarious and entirely unexpected journey, involving, among other surprises, a suitcase stuffed with cash, some unpleasant criminals, a friendly hot-dog stand operator, and an elephant (not to mention a death by elephant).

It would be the adventure of a lifetime for anyone else, but Allan has a larger-than-life backstory: Not only has he witnessed some of the most important events of the twentieth century, but he has actually played a key role in them. Starting out in munitions as a boy, he somehow finds himself involved in many of the key explosions of the twentieth century and travels the world, sharing meals and more with everyone from Stalin, Churchill, and Truman to Mao, Franco, and de Gaulle. Quirky and utterly unique, The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared has charmed readers across the world.

THIS IS A HOOT and-a-half! Set in the quaint backcountry of Sweden, this totally delightful story begins with a centenarian who breaks out of his rest home. He comes upon a suitcase stuffed with money and meets up with characters good and bad, chased by both. As he becomes embroiled in events soon followed by the national press, this sighted "Mr. McGoo" is flat-out HILARIOUS, as are some of the country-bumpkins both chasing and abetting him, including one ally with a captured elephant. Yet all of this is very Swedish, down-home realistic, not slapstick. As we follow this narrative, interspersed are tales of the old man's spectacular accomplishments in earlier times when he had more of his faculties. He was always apolitical to a fault, highly generous, but very naive, which continually led him into dangerous situations. For example, he helped the Los Alamos physicists develop the atomic bomb but, ever helpful, did the same later for the USSR. These earlier scenes are as HILARIOUS as those in the present, including his squirrelly adventures in Spain, America, China, the Himalayas, Iran, Russia, North Korea, and France, where he personally met with their squirrelly leaders. However, if you wish to follow only the centenarian's current misadventures, you can just skip to the chapters in present time, as the chapters are labeled by year - but then you'd miss some of the best parts of this book. The book is perfectly written and edited. NO ONE SHOULD MISS OUT ON THIS STORY!You Must Read This Book! Extremely Creative and Well Done This by far one of the most unique books I have ever read. I had mentioned to a friend from Sweden that I enjoyed "A Man Named Ove," and he said if I liked that I should red this one. Well I am so happy I took his advice. (And although I loved the book, I didn't rate it a five since I truly reserve that rating for extraordinary. While this is awesome, it is not at the level of, say, Ken Follett's centuries' books -- until the final one.)Author Jonas Jonasson has cleverly created a story that starts with the birthday of a spunky 100-year old man living in an old-age home somewhere in Sweden (I did not internalize the names of the towns and cities). The town is preparing a publicity stunt celebration for him and he decides he doesn't want to attend (no alcohol will be served), so he climbs out his window (in his slippers) and seemingly disappears (thus the title). As the chapters progress,, we travel with him on his adventure -- as well as go back and forth through his life -- so we learn of the experiences and adventures he's survived through those 100 years. Hint: his amazing life surprisingly includes many continents, many historical leaders and events from countries around the world. Who would think that?Don't want to give away the story, but, as I have been suggesting to my friends these days: You must read this book ... you will be glad you did!Quirky, fun read! When I saw this book I knew I had to grab a copy as a gift for my brother in law's father who turned 100 last week. (Happy Birthday Zach! photo below!) When I noted it had sold 5 million copies and was being released as a movie, I skimmed it and decided it would be an interesting read. And it was. Sort of a "Forrest Gump" for seniors as some of the characters included his the review of his life and wanderings include Harry Truman, General Franco, Stalin, Mao Zedong and others and include descriptions of his assisting in the development of the atomic bomb while working as a janitor as Los Alamos. Some of the fictional characters are great - Einstein's dumber half brother, for example and the twists and turns of his life, though farfetched are interesting. All in all, a fun read. Take a copy to the beach!

Title: Goliath Pdf The 100-Year War Between Monopoly Power and Democracy
A startling look at how concentrated financial power and consumerism transformed American politics, resulting in the emergence of populism and authoritarianism, the fall of the Democratic Party—while also providing the steps needed to create a new democracy.

Americans once had a coherent and clear understanding of political tyranny, one crafted by Thomas Jefferson and updated for the industrial age by Louis Brandeis. A concentration of power, whether in the hands of a military dictator or a JP Morgan, was understood as autocratic and dangerous to individual liberty and democracy. This idea stretched back to the country’s founding. In the 1930s, people observed that the Great Depression was caused by financial concentration in the hands of a few whose misuse of their power induced a financial collapse. They drew on this tradition to craft the New Deal.

In Goliath, Matt Stoller explains how authoritarianism and populism have returned to American politics for the first time in eighty years, as the outcome of the 2016 election shook our faith in democratic institutions. It has brought to the fore dangerous forces that many modern Americans never even knew existed. Today’s bitter recriminations and panic represent more than just fear of the future, they reflect a basic confusion about what is happening and the historical backstory that brought us to this moment.

The true effects of populism, a shrinking middle class, and concentrated financial wealth are only just beginning to manifest themselves under the current administrations. The lessons of Stoller’s study will only grow more relevant as time passes. Building upon his viral article in The Atlantic, “How the Democrats Killed Their Populist Soul,” Stoller illustrates in rich detail how we arrived at this tenuous moment, and the steps we must take to create a new democracy.

Essential reading to understand our country's antimonopoly history Stoller’s Goliath is a much-needed booster shot to the American antimonopoly movement. Goliath seeks to educate Americans on the history of antimonopoly policy, which paved the road to greater economic equality and liberty in the first half of the twentieth century. Stoller guides the reader through history and provides a near first-person perspective by elaborating on the commitment and defenders of liberty, including Louis Brandeis and Wright Patman. Stoller details how Brandeis’ and Patman’s ideas flourished in particular during a post-Depression America where foundational institutions, policies, and statutes, enacted as part of the New Deal, were implemented to ensure economic equality, foster vibrant competition in the market place, and most importantly secure our democracy. However, Stoller also details the purposeful and planned takeover of our economic system by corporate monopolists and their success in breaking down New Deal institutions. Stoller recounts how the success of the corporate monopolists – facilitated by Republicans, Democrats, and economists of all intellectual backgrounds – directly contributed to America’s current precarious economic situation, the financial crisis, and record economic inequality. Stoller’s book will answer frustrated American’s most pressing questions such as why competition in America rotting away in every sector, what caused America's economic engine to only work for a select few, and how to restore our political system so that it works for everyone. Ultimately, the lesson from Stoller is that America’s history is direct evidence that our economic and political institutions are within our control, and the result of who is granted the control over them is answered by who fights for it.

The Mind-Gut Connection Free Pdf

ISBN: 0062376586
Title: The Mind-Gut Connection Pdf How the Hidden Conversation Within Our Bodies Impacts Our Mood, Our Choices, and Our Overall Health
Author: Emeran Mayer
Published Date: 2017-07-04
Page: 208

“The Mind-Gut Connection presents the incredibly humbling reality that our very perception and interpretation of the world around us is virtually dictated by the microbes living within us. This book redefines what it means to be healthy and eloquently provides the means to manifest that goal.” (David Perlmutter, MD, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Grain Brain and Brain Maker)“Drawing on his vast experience as a practicing gastroenterologist, Dr. Mayer writes about the connections that our brains have with our guts, especially with the microbes that make the gut their home. Describing a rapidly advancing realm of knowledge, this thoughtful guide provides practical advice to improve health.” (Martin J. Blaser, MD, author of Missing Microbes)“Dr. Emeran Mayer elucidates the intricate biochemical dialogue that occurs between the brain, digestive tract, and trillions of bacteria residing in the gut. He dubs this form of communication ‘microbe-speak’ and speculates on its implications for social behavior, decision making, emotional wellbeing, and maybe mental health.” (Booklist)“After a long period of neglect the enteric nervous system has been recognized as the ‘second brain’. Dr. Emeran Mayer, a true expert of this topic, has now written the best lay-public guide yet to this spectacular part of ourselves. Recommended reading.” (Antonio Demasio, author of Descartes’ Error, The Feeling of What Happens, and The Self Comes to Mind)“I have known Emeran Mayer for years and have learned to pay attention to what he says and writes. The Mind-Gut Connection is a delight. Both scholarly and fun to read, I highly recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about how the mind and gut communicate.” (Michael D. Gershon, MD, author of The Second Brain)“Microbiome research is revolutionizing our understanding of the human body and the brain. In The Mind-Gut Connection, Dr. Emeran Mayer provides authoritative insight into this rapidly expanding field. Synthesizing recent research with patient stories and personal anecdotes, he offers practical, evidence-based recommendations to keep the dialogue between the brain, the gut, and its microbes flowing smoothly.” (Rob Knight, PhD, author of Follow Your Gut and director of the Center for Microbiome Innovation, UC San Diego)“The Mind-Gut Connection is a revolutionary new holistic view of what keeps us healthy, ranging from the food choices we make to the ways we can train our mind, with the ultimate goal of attaining optimal health. ” (Kenneth R. Pelletier, PhD, MD, Clincal Professor of Medicine and Professor of Public Health, University of California School of Medicine (UCSF))“Microbiome research is revolutionizing our understanding of the human body and the brain. In The Mind-Gut Connection, Dr. Emeran Mayer provides authoritative insight into this rapidly expanding field. Synthesizing recent research with patient stories and personal anecdotes, he offers practical, evidence-based recommendations to keep the dialogue between the brain, the gut, and its microbes flowing smoothly.” (SELF online) Chances are, at some point in your life you’ve noticed the connection between your brain and your gut. If you’ve ever felt queasy as you walked into an uncomfortable situation or based a life decision based on a “gut feeling,” then you know that sometimes our bodies react faster than our minds. Most of us have also experienced the same phenomenon in reverse, where our mental state has affected our digestive system—like the butterflies in our stomach before an important meeting or a first date. But while the dialogue between the mind and the gut has been recognized by ancient healing traditions for centuries, scientists today are just starting to understand how powerful and far-reaching that connection is.In The Mind-Gut Connection, Dr. Emeran Mayer offers a cutting-edge view into this developing science, showing us the full impact of how the brain, gut, and microbiome—the community of microorganisms that lives inside the digestive tract—communicate. When this communication system is out of balance, major health problems can crop up, including digestive disorders, obesity, depression, anxiety, food sensitivities, allergies, and fatigue. With a few simple changes to our diet and lifestyle, we can enjoy a happier mind-set, enhanced immunity, a decreased risk of developing neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, and even lose weight. With a simple, practical regimen drawn from forty years of clinical practice and the latest research, Dr. Mayer shows us that paying attention to the mind-gut balance is the key to unlocking vibrant health.

Combining cutting-edge neuroscience with the latest discoveries on the human microbiome, a practical guide in the tradition of Wheat Belly and Grain Brain that conclusively demonstrates the inextricable, biological link between mind and body.

We have all experienced the connection between our mind and our gut—the decision we made because it “felt right”; the butterflies in our stomach before a big meeting; the anxious stomach rumbling when we’re stressed out. While the dialogue between the gut and the brain has been recognized by ancient healing traditions, including Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine, Western medicine has failed to appreciate the complexity of how the brain, gut, and more recently, the microbiome—the microorganisms that live inside us—communicate with one another. In The Mind-Gut Connection, Dr. Emeran Mayer, executive director of the UCLA Center for Neurobiology of Stress, offers a revolutionary look at this developing science, teaching us how to harness the power of the mind-gut connection to take charge of our health.

The Mind-Gut Connection shows how to keep the brain-gut communication clear and balanced to:

• heal the gut by focusing on a plant-based diet

• balance the microbiome by consuming fermented foods and probiotics, fasting, and cutting out sugar and processed foods

• promote weight loss by detoxifying and creating healthy digestion and maximum nutrient absorption

• boost immunity and prevent the onset of neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s and

Alzheimer’s

• generate a happier mindset and reduce fatigue, moodiness, anxiety, and depression

• prevent and heal GI disorders such as leaky gut syndrome, food sensitivities and allergies, and IBS, as well as digestive discomfort such as heartburn and bloating

• and much more.

Must Read for All This book is a must-read. It's no secret that our medical system is suffering. The reasons are multi-factorial. But what Dr. Mayer's book illuminates is that a new paradigm for understanding how our bodies function (and malfunction) is overdue. Once we understand that the brain, gut and bacteria are in communication, the construct of specialties of medicine based on body part or system is outdated. As Dr. Mayer so aptly states, our current system of medicine is based on a post-industrial age concept of a machine with parts that go bad. Hypertension? Off to the cardiologist. Abdominal pain? Gastroenterologist. The overhaul will require that we adopt a holistic perspective, that the communication between systems and organs is as important as the systems and organs themselves. This mandate is no different than the one for our society as a whole. As a recently hired physician at UCLA, never having heard of Dr. Mayer, I saw his book on the shelf of a colleague. Its name appealed to me and I ordered it that night. To say I was excited to see my personal long-held philosophies in print, validated by years of Dr. Mayer's research and experience, was an understatement. Fast forward six months, I am now exploring collaboration with Dr. Mayer and others with the intention of researching the mind-gut-microbiome connection with eating disorders. Our concepts must evolve, and Dr. Mayer's book points us in the right direction.Sets the standard for user friendly, informative, and science based microbiome book for wide audience There is sure no shortage of trade books on the microbiome and the list of books is bound to proliferate given the popularity of the topic. This book separates itself from the pack in a number of ways. First, Dr Mayer is one of the select group of scientists worldwide whose work has helped fuel research into what we know about the microbiome and its importance to our health. While other scientists saw painful medical disorders like irritable bowel syndrome as a “psychiatric disorder” Dr Mayer was conducting research showing that the brain has a far more powerful and complex role in tipping the balance between health and illness than just governing our mental wellbeing. Because he knows what he is talking about, the reader can feel confident that the material is accurate, trust worthy, and backed by evidence tested in rigorous laboratory settings. This is no small feat among the growing number of books chock full of half-truths, exaggerations, and outright inaccuracies that make it hard for the reader to separate fact from fiction. Second, Dr Mayer emphasizes the importance not only of how our mood, behaviors like our activity level and what we eat and drink, and mindset can impact the collection of microbes that colonize the human body but how our microbiome can in turn impact the brain. There is no other book available that covers so much terrain with such expertise and precision. Third, the book is an easy read, written in such an engaging and non-technical manner that even the person whose last science book was in 10th grade bio class will find this book a pleasure to read, making it far and away the best microbiome book out there for general audience. Finally, as a gifted clinician, Dr Mayer concludes the book with some “nuts and bolts” strategies for how to make simple lifestyle changes that put in practice what microbiome research tells us about how to optimize our health. A+: Recommend wholeheartedly-- Dr Jeffrey Lackner, Behavioral Medicine Clinic, University at Buffalo, SUNYLeft me wanting more Really thought provoking. I learned a lot by reading this book. There are more serotonin neurons in the gut than in the brain. I felt like it needed more advice, though. I learned a lot but not sure how to put it into effect to help myself with brain-gut problems. What is the next step please?

Cruel Boy is an exciting and thrilling new Dark Bully Romance standalone novel by New York Times & USA Today Bestselling Author Clarissa Wild

WARNING: This book includes scenes that may be disturbing to some readers.

Things are about to get crazy!! Hold on tight, things are about to get crazy!!!Ms. Wild has so much range in her writing repertoire and it never ceases to amaze me how fabulous her skill is with each new release.Cruel Boy was the perfect bully romance with a build up of suspense that will have you gritting your teeth to get to the truth and let me tell you the truth\twist was so surprising!!Nate has a secret that could cost him everything and the one thing standing in the way of it staying buried is Sam. Yes she seen something that night and yes she has photographic proof but all may not be how it seems on the surface.Nate has decided he'll get what he needs from her by bullying it from her but Sam is not at all what he expected and soon he's fighting for something even more important, her heart.Cruel Boy had my heart racing and my hands gripping my kindle as I flipped through the pages. This is one you don't want to miss!!Twisted story of a cruel boy and a witty girl A match made in heaven. This was my first thought when I read this book. Cruel boy was talking to me in so many ways I cannot even express. We have our rich boy, Nate. A classic popular jock of an elite high school for the rich and super. He is good looking, he is a party animal and enjoys life to the fullest. Then tragedy strikes and changes a lot of people involved in this. Sam was never supposed to be on the radar of Nate. But she learned a dark secret he would do anything to protect. What was very refreshing for me in this book is how real this whole story is. The characters are very believable, real and Sam is not a damsel in distress. Definitely not. She can look out for herself, she is standing up to her bullies and strikes back with a vengeance if needed. I enjoyed their little dance around each other, how they got to learn the other, how their characteristic grew into one awesome adult from an adolescent. I was so immersed in the book I lost count of time and had to read until finish because who knows what happens when I am not looking. I HAD to know the end of their story and it did not disappoint.I totally recommend it if you love suspenseful, real and twisted bully love stories. This one is a winner.I’m loving this Book Hard!! This was so so good!! Nate Wilson is more than Falcon Elite’s perfect football quarterback. He’s also hiding a huge secret that could change his life forever...and Samantha “Sam” Cook has the proof of what that secret is. Ever since he saw the girl with white blonde hair, he can’t seem to forget about her. Sam might go to Falcon Elite too but she doesn’t fit into all the cliques. What’s Nate really hiding? One night changed his life forever...keeping it a secret, now that’s the hard part. This is a dark teen bully romance with a romantic suspense aspect. I really enjoyed trying to figure out the secret. Nate is so troubled I felt so bad for what he was going through. Sam is a great strong female even when being bullied, she stood her ground and I loved that. I’m not really into bully romances but this was more of a dark romance with some high school bullying thrown in (and you know why they are doing it) in case you’re on the fence about this troupe. I would give this one a try as I really enjoyed the story and all the twists. Told in dual POV

These 31 original illustrations of lovingly furnished rooms and welcoming outdoor spaces detail everything from immaculate interiors of bedrooms, studies, and kitchens to gorgeous flower-filled backyards and beautifully decorated front porches — plus dozing dogs and curious cats. Pages are perforated and printed on one side only for easy removal and display. Specially designed for experienced colorists, Home Sweet Home and other Creative Haven® adult coloring books offer an escape to a world of inspiration and artistic fulfillment. Each title is also an effective and fun-filled way to relax and reduce stress.
