“A good book is one whose advice you believe. A great book is one whose advice you follow. This is a book that can change your life, as its ideas have changed mine.”—Robert J. Sternberg, co-author of Teaching for Wisdom, Intelligence, Creativity, and Success “An essential read for parents, teachers [and] coaches . . . as well as for those who would like to increase their own feelings of success and fulfillment.”—Library Journal (starred review) “Everyone should read this book.”—Chip Heath and Dan Heath, authors of Made to Stick “One of the most influential books ever about motivation.”—Po Bronson, author of NurtureShock “If you manage people or are a parent (which is a form of managing people), drop everything and read Mindset.”—Guy Kawasaki, author of The Art of the Start 2.0 Carol S. Dweck, Ph.D., is widely regarded as one of the world’s leading researchers in the fields of personality, social psychology, and developmental psychology. She is the Lewis and Virginia Eaton Professor of Psychology at Stanford University, has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences, and has won nine lifetime achievement awards for her research. She addressed the United Nations on the eve of their new global development plan and has advised governments on educational and economic policies. Her work has been featured in almost every major national publication, and she has appeared on Today, Good Morning America, and 20/20. She lives with her husband in Palo Alto, California. From the Hardcover edition.

This updated edition of the book that has changed millions of lives with its insights into the growth mindset can help you start the new year off right.

After decades of research, world-renowned Stanford University psychologist Carol S. Dweck, Ph.D., discovered a simple but groundbreaking idea: the power of mindset. In this brilliant book, she shows how success in school, work, sports, the arts, and almost every area of human endeavor can be dramatically influenced by how we think about our talents and abilities. People with a fixed mindset—those who believe that abilities are fixed—are less likely to flourish than those with a growth mindset—those who believe that abilities can be developed. Mindset reveals how great parents, teachers, managers, and athletes can put this idea to use to foster outstanding accomplishment.

In this edition, Dweck offers new insights into her now famous and broadly embraced concept. She introduces a phenomenon she calls false growth mindset and guides people toward adopting a deeper, truer growth mindset. She also expands the mindset concept beyond the individual, applying it to the cultures of groups and organizations. With the right mindset, you can motivate those you lead, teach, and love—to transform their lives and your own.

Praise for Mindset

“If you manage people or are a parent (which is a form of managing people), drop everything and read Mindset.”—Guy Kawasaki, author of The Art of the Start 2.0

Interesting theory, yet lacking depth I first came across the author in a TED video. Her talk about how "not yet" generates far more power than "fail" was interesting and I decided to buy her book to further read into her studies. The book in general is an interesting piece of work. I like the way she describes the "growth mindset". However, most of the book seems to focus on discussing the difference between "fixed mindset" and "growth mindset" applied to different fields. So it does get very predictable and tedious. There is far not enough discussion about how to better develop the "growth mindset". It is like the author uses the entire book to emphasize how important "growth mindset" is but doesn't really offer much help. In particular, I don't like how she attributes every corporate failure to "fixed mindset". I think it is way too generalizing and over-simplifying.Rather terrible This was the book that completely turned me off from the psychology/self-help genre. It lacked depth and felt like an endless repetition of comparing situations in which one person had the "proper" mindset and another had the "wrong" mindset, followed by a few condescending, didactic paragraphs on why the proper mindset was necessary in leading the former to success; it's apparently the key to everything. Very little was mentioned on *how* to actually achieve this mindset. On the bright side, I've now become more tolerant towards other not-so-great books. It'd be pretty hard to get any worse than this one.

Under Currents Pdf

ISBN: B07JBPDK57
Title: Under Currents Pdf

For both Zane and Darby, their small town roots hold a terrible secret. Now, decades later, they've come together to build a new life. But will the past set them free or pull them under?

Zane Bigelow grew up in a beautiful, perfectly kept house in North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains. Strangers and even Zane's own aunt across the lake see his parents as a successful surgeon and his stylish wife, making appearances at their children's ballet recitals and baseball games. Only Zane and his sister know the truth, until one brutal night finally reveals cracks in the facade, and Zane escapes for college without a thought of looking back....

Years later, Zane returns to his hometown determined to reconnect with the place and people that mean so much to him, despite the painful memories. As he resumes life in the colorful town, he meets a gifted landscape artist named Darby, who is on the run from ghosts of her own.

Together, they will have to teach each other what it means to face the past, and stand up for the ones they love.

Horrid ugly story. Don’t buy this book! Ugly story told in a tiresome and ugly way. Don’t buy this book!!good beach read Understand up front that this is not another romantic suspense novel from Roberts (a master of the genre) but instead a family saga about overcoming abuse, healing, and finding love. Everyone thought Zane and his sister Britt had everything when they were kids and indeed they did- including domestic abuse. Fortunately for both of them, they came out of the horror ok and compelled to do good. Darby, a landscape artist, and Zane meet when Zane goes home to Lakeview, where Darby has landed in her escape from a bad situation. Unfortunately, as these two find their way to each other, there's a menace out there threatening their happiness. This isn't too twisty and is more of a romance than a thriller. Thanks to Edelweiss for the ARC. For Roberts fans and those looking for a good beach read.Intense! I had a great time with this book. I read quite a few books written by Nora Roberts years ago but had not picked up any in recent years. I am now questioning my decision-making skills because I have clearly been missing out. This was a book that started with a bang and was nearly impossible to put down. I honestly enjoyed the experience of reading this book. The book opens in Zane's childhood. He is a teenager that shows a lot of promise in baseball. He hopes to use his skill in the sport to escape his home life. Things are not as perfect at home as they might appear to be to others in their little town. His mother has served as the school's PTA president and his father is the chief surgeon at the area hospital. Zane, his sister, Britt, and their parents live in the largest home in town and have a very large lifestyle. Unfortunately, the reality of their family includes child abuse and domestic violence.I was completely captivated by this book at the start. The descriptions of everything Zane and Britt had to endure in their home were so vivid that they felt real to me. I felt the pain right along with this group of characters and prayed that things would work out for them. The book then jumps in time and it was nice to see Zane and Britt as adults. Well adjusted adults with new problems to face.Darby is ready for a new start. She is a skilled gardener and landscaper and wants to start up a new business in town. Her first client happens to be Zane's aunt. Darby forms bonds with the people in town very quickly and is soon an important member of the community. When she starts working on Zane's house, things heat up quickly.I really liked the characters in this book. Zane and Darby have both overcome terrible events from their past. They seem to fit together almost perfectly and have great chemistry. I liked how honest these two were with each other and how they seemed to know when to give the other some space. Zane is part of a huge family and I really enjoyed seeing those characters both in the early scenes during his teen years and the section that took place in his adulthood. This book was exciting. Maybe a bit too much in a way. I really did enjoy the story but I felt like some of the things that happened were just too unlikely. I guess everything in the book could be possible but it felt like more was going on than was necessary. It is a work of fiction so I just ran with it but I couldn't help but think about how remarkable it would be to have all of these things happen in such a short time frame.I would highly recommend this book to others. This book does deal with both domestic violence and child abuse so it might be a difficult story for some readers. I thought that the situations in the book were vividly told and handled very well. I definitely plan to read more from Nora Roberts!I received a review copy of this book from St. Martin's Press.

It gives you a better chance of experiencing the culture. This book contains all the details which can make you a master of French language. Very informative and useful French learning guide!Good beginner's guide to French language. Recommended. Well it’s very hard to learn French language. I had learned some basic of it and it was quite hard. It took a little bit time to learn French language. And it took me many days to talk in their accent. This book is very helpful in learning French language. This book guides you step-by-step and teach you from basics. You don’t need to take an expensive class for it. This book is for beginners, who want to get a gist of how French language is.Practice makes a man perfect, so you will start to feel easy if you work hard. This book is very interesting and I love this book. Highly recommended for those people who really want to learn this language.Better than nothing, I guess Although the title implies that you’ll learn “French in a Week”, what it does is have you stare at a random list of French phrases for a week, after which time you’ll have promptly forgotten everything you read and be right back to where you started. To make it worse, this book is rife with errors that should have been caught by even a cursory proofread by someone conversant in French (e.g. “doux” for “deux”). Add to that terrible, strange pseudo-phonetic explanations on how to pronounce French words (e.g. “le” is pronounced “ler”?!? and “gauche” according to the author is pronounced “gosh”, which I’m sure a lot of people would try to pronounce like “gosh, gee willy, mister!”). Also it is unclear exactly who pseudonymous “Language Master” and what his qualifications are, as he/she seems to churn out similar appearing books in many languages, all of similar (poor) quality. Stay away, there are many, many better books and websites out there. Also, in general phrasebooks are a bad idea for several reasons:1) It teaches you nothing about what actual words mean, how and why they are put together in a certain way.2) Because you don’t understand, you’re just learning a bunch of random sounds that you’re sure to forget in a week.3) You’re almost guaranteed to get the pronunciation wrong, and in French this is SO crucial, so the person to whom you’re speaking to is unlikely to understand you at all.4) If they do understand you, they’ll reply in normal, conversational French, which doesn’t follow the rigid rules of a phrase book, so you’ll have no idea what they said back to you!Sorry, but if you want to learn how to communicate with native speakers, it takes months to years of consistent EFFORT, and in this modern world world with the Internet, online translators and maps, and of course many French people taking years of English in their educational system, a book like this is completely useless, and possibly even harmful to your efforts to learn French.

Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Original and Uncensored) Free Pdf

ISBN: 1071271326
Title: Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Original and Uncensored) Pdf
Set in Southern pre-civil war society, "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" is told in the first person by the title character, a young boy traveling with an escaped slave down the Mississippi River. Despite its scathing satire of slavery and racism, Twain's classic American novel continues to attract censorship and outright bans for its frequent use of racial slurs common in the antebellum South.

Print too small for my old eyes. While the story is a classic, I was disappointed that I couldn't read the very small print--even with glasses.

Business Adventures Free Pdf

ISBN: B00L1TPCKW
Title: Business Adventures Pdf Twelve Classic Tales from the World of Wall Street
Business Adventures remains the best business book I’ve ever read.” —Bill Gates, The Wall Street Journal

What do the $350 million Ford Motor Company disaster known as the Edsel, the fast and incredible rise of Xerox, and the unbelievable scandals at General Electric and Texas Gulf Sulphur have in common? Each is an example of how an iconic company was defined by a particular moment of fame or notoriety; these notable and fascinating accounts are as relevant today to understanding the intricacies of corporate life as they were when the events happened.

Stories about Wall Street are infused with drama and adventure and reveal the machinations and volatile nature of the world of finance. Longtime New Yorker contributor John Brooks’s insightful reportage is so full of personality and critical detail that whether he is looking at the astounding market crash of 1962, the collapse of a well-known brokerage firm, or the bold attempt by American bankers to save the British pound, one gets the sense that history repeats itself.

Five additional stories on equally fascinating subjects round out this wonderful collection that will both entertain and inform readers . . . Business Adventures is truly financial journalism at its liveliest and best.

An interesting read A great collections of some amazing business events from the 1960's. Truly timeless in their appropriateness in a business context. I highly recommended this book to anyone interested in business and ethics to a large degree. An interesting read. Not as good as advertised Yes, like many people I read that Warren Buffett and Bill Gates both consider this book 1 of the best ever written. In fact, as the story goes, Bill Gates got his copy from Warren Buffett.Other than the interesting history in the book, it is of limited value in the current business world. It would be a can to reading about how hard it was treating medical diseases in the 1900s before the invention or discovery of antibiotics and anesthesia. It's interesting but of historical interest only. There's very little that can be gleaned or used in today's current and modern world.I'm old enough to remember all of the anecdotes and stories that are told. However, even I can understand how many of the descriptions and explanations of the business issues are not applicable in today's world.Read it for idle curiosity. Do not expect any great insight.Anecdotes on Business I had heard, as I think everyone else has, that Business Adventures was a favorite book of Bill Gates and Warren Buffet. I read the ebook, and I understand a print version will be forthcoming in September. This book makes me feel as though I'm sitting at the knee of my grandfather, listening to wise recollections.A writer of articles in the 1950's and 1960, many for the New Yorker, the author intelligently and thoughtfully steps through 12 events, one per chapter. At first I thought perhaps I was particularly dense and wasn't getting the message. What held these stories together? Eventually, I realized that the author is not driving home a point, selling anything, or giving advice. His observations leave room for the reader to consider events, their connections, their parallels to today, the importance of character, and the question of morality in business. It was refreshing not to be told what to think.I enjoyed the stories of Ford's Edsel, Piggly Wiggly, Xerox, Goodrich vs Latex. The chapter on the federal income tax is particularly relevant, given the wide-spread debate about taxes and modern conversations about the 1%.John Brooks' perspective is firmly rooted in the past, when the book was written, and provides readers opportunity for a sense of omniscience since we can consider ramifications the author himself could not be aware of, at that time.Times may change. People do not.
