C.S. Lewis’ The Four Loves was not a book that I expected to reshape my thinking. I first picked it up while following the reading guide at the end of Lindskoog’s Mere Christian. I thought it would be a fun read during valentine’s season. One often is most vulnerable to the trap when one is not alert…
And so, once more, C.S. Lewis has changed my thought on a broad portion of life. He’s done it to me before–the Narnian Books, Mere Christianity, An Experiment In Criticism–have all been books that have greatly shaped me. Now I can add the Four Loves to the list.
One does not often sit down and ponder the different kinds of love. One may have generalized "loved ones" such as family and friends, we may "love" certain activities or places, we may even say we are "in love" … but do we stop to consider our words?
Lewis spends time surveying the lay of love’s different lands. Building on blocks of seemingly deepening emotion, he moves from looking at affection to friendship to erotic love (Eros) to the love of God (Agape). Each is looked at in detail, their meaning and impact on life is explored.
The most helpful thing about this book is that Lewis allows the reader to think about how they deal with their own loves in life. Does one stress a certain kind of love in an unhealthy way? Do we ignore the possibilities of one love because another kind holds too much sway in our lives?
I believe Lewis makes the case that God’s love should be primary in the lives of humans. The other loves, though they can be wonderful in their place, can be used unnaturally and ineffectively to try and fill in for Agape if it is not felt. A healthy life will involve all four loves. Yet they must be rooted and grounded in Agape.
I was not especially expecting to be engrossed by a book about four greek words, but I was wrong. This was one of the better books that I have ever read. Lewis overviews each of the four types of love: storge (affection), phileo (friendship), eros (romantic love), and agape (charity or God-love). Each discussion was extremely insightful, especially the friendship one.

He desribed storge as the kind of love we have for people whome we spend a lot of time with, but whom with we do not necessarily have a lot in common with. For example, if you have a sibling whom you do not share many interests with but whom you love nonetheless, it is probably storge. These are people whom you probably would not be friends with if you were not related to or neighbors to these people. Lewis notes that these are people we often do not really realize how much we loved until they are gone (or until we realize that they are those kind of people to us).

He had an amazing chapter on phileo and the gift of friendship as well. I won’t go into much detail so that you can enjoy it more when you actually get around to reading it. Let me just say that it made me appreciate my friends much more, and changed my views on what a friend is. He had the amazing insight that each friend brings out a different part of you. He noted that his friendship with J. R. Tolkien was not quite the same after Charles Williams died, because Williams brought out parts of Tokien that Lewis did not. Very insightful.

Lewis’ discussion of eros was very insightful as well. He discussed the nature of romantic love, and what romantic love looks like in a marriage. His main point seemed to be that eros loves the other person, and does not try to make the other person become more like himself.

The Nag Hammadi Scriptures Kindle Edition

The Nag Hammadi Scriptures Kindle Edition

File Size: 1912 KBPrint Length: 866 pagesPublisher: HarperCollins e-books; 1st edition (September 14, 2010)Publication Date: September 14, 2010 Sold by:  Digital Services, Inc. For the title of this review I chose an excerpt from "The Dialogue of the Savior" which belonged to NHC III,5. On my quest to better understanding ‘gnosticism’ I first read Andrew Phillip Smith’s book titled, "The Gnostics". His brief treatise on the overall scope of what gnosticism is really all about provided me with a more concise understanding of this exhaustive, scholarly translation of the Nag Hammadi text.

This book is by far the most complete and in-depth translation to date and will probably never be equaled. Scholars such as Marvin Meyer, Elaine Pagels, Madeleine Scopello, Einar Thomassen and John D. Turner are just a few of the names involved with the translation of the Nag Hammadi scriptures. There is an array of backgrounds involved which ultimately provide very different interpretations of the text, but this diversity only helps the reader to draw his/her own conclusions as to interpretation.

One positive aspect to this book is decision NOT to guess what the translation might have been. Quite frankly, much of the text within certain tractates were severely damaged and/or missing. Instead of guessing or including what the text may have said, Meyer and others, merely let the reader know that much of the text itself is missing. This is, of course refreshing, as many modern translations of either other Gnostic or Essene texts, such as the Dead Sea Scrolls, authors will simply insert modern lexicons assuming that it follows suit to what we have today. Meyer and company don’t do this, instead they provide a well documented, heavily footnoted, scholarly work.
The Nag Hammadi Scriptures: The Revised and Updated Translation of Sacred Gnostic Texts – The International Edition. Edited by Marvin Meyer. New York: Harper Collins, 2008. Paperback, 844 pages. ISBN 9780061626005

The present work, as the most complete and up-to-date English-language edition of the Nag Hammadi Scriptures, is probably the finest available edition for the general reader today and should appeal to a wide range of readers with varying interests.

Judging by the reviews, most readers seem to come to these texts with a strong Biblical background and are surprised to see how strikingly different they can be to the Bible.

In my own case I come to them with a background in Asian thought and am amazed at how strikingly similar they can at times be to the sacred texts of the East.

This is understandable since, as Duncan Greenlees pointed out in his excellent anthologyThe Gospel of The Gnostics (page xxvi): "We have not yet worked out the actual influence of India upon the Western … Gnostics; yet it is clear to the sympathetic, and therefore to the honest, student it must have been very great. At times we can almost recognize a direct quotation from some Indian scripture."

To realize that he is right we need only turn, for example, to logion 24 of the Gospel of Thomas where we find Jesus saying (page 143):

"There is light within a person of light, and it shines on the whole world. If it does not shine, it is dark.

How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth: Fourth Edition Paperback – Deluxe Edition, June 24, 2014
Author: Visit ‘s Gordon D. Fee Page ID: 0310517826

About the Author

Gordon D. Fee (PhD, University of Southern California) is Professor Emeritus of New Testament Studies at Regent College, Vancouver, British Columbia.

Douglas Stuart is Professor of Old Testament and Chair of the Division of Biblical Studies at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. He holds the B.A. and Ph.D. from Harvard University. Among his earlier writings are Studies in Early Hebrew Meter, Old Testament Exegesis: A Primer for Students and Pastors, and Favorite Old Testament Passages.

Paperback: 304 pagesPublisher: Zondervan; 4 edition (June 24, 2014)Language: EnglishISBN-10: 0310517826ISBN-13: 978-0310517825 Product Dimensions: 5.2 x 0.8 x 8 inches Shipping Weight: 0.3 ounces (View shipping rates and policies) Best Sellers Rank: #5,242 in Books (See Top 100 in Books) #3 in Books > Christian Books & Bibles > Bible Study & Reference > Criticism & Interpretation > Exegesis & Hermeneutics #34 in Books > Christian Books & Bibles > Bible Study & Reference > Bible Study #1094 in Books > Religion & Spirituality
The Kindle formatting could be a bit better especially with graphs and examples, but that may be why the price is only $3.95! A super bargain in my book!:) (Update 11/21/14 – based on the book preview, the formating has been fixed, but now the price is up to $12.99 – still reasonable for the most Biblically sound, while not overly academic, book on hermeneutics.)
In summary, Fee and Stuart book serves as a bridge between academics and lay people on the subject of understanding and applying scripture. Because of the excellent structure of the book, people can read the book with Fee and Stuart’s opinions, and then form their own ideas. The breath of their knowledge will definitely help one interact with the Bible better.
Ok first the facts: my seminary professor forced me to do a book critique on this book. At first I hated it, especially because I had the third edition. I took my teacher to task three times and had to stop reading the third edition. Then-hooray-I found out the fourth edition was published and even though the content isn’t all that different; at least I didn’t have to deal with ten year old scholarship and the TNIV notations. I made it through the first three chapters, and it was mostly clear sailing after then!:) This book is a book on hermeneutics (understanding what scriptures meant back then and applying it correctly to your life) of the various types of writing types found in the Bible so that people can understand their Bibles better in their devotional and study times. This book bridges the gap between scholarly hermeneutics textbooks and the general public. While it is tough to wade through at times, it is probably the best popular hermeneutics book, because of its easy chapter structure.
If teaching disciples to read the Bible for themselves is the most important task pastors, teachers, churches can perform then I believe most have failed. I grew up in a conservative Southern Baptist church context that taught the innerancy and importance of reading Scripture daily and studying it corporately, but never once had a lesson in exegesis, hermeneutics, biblical theology, etc. I was fairly well-versed in theologically-rich works by John Piper and Jonathan Edwards in college, as well as apologetics, but still didn’t understand how NOT to read my Bible, and how NOT to use commentaries (among other things). One shouldn’t have to go to seminary to learn these things if reading the Bible is essential to the Christian life. It really wasn’t until I started listening to expositional preachers and noticing the difference of how they handled Scripture and explaining how NOT to handle Scripture that I began to "get it." Too often I see well-known teachers in errors of redefinition and decontextualization, which simply recreates itself as disciples make disciples.

There’s a reason why expositional preaching and biblical theology are at the forefront of the Nine Marks of a Healthy Church. The importance and practical application of proper exegesis and hermeneutics are what Gordon Fee and Douglas Stuart teach in this book. I’m actually disturbed by who I haven’t seen seen write reviews of this book on Goodreads and . Reading this book, and others like it which they recommend, is extremely important. This is basically a how-to guide made as simple as possible, providing some basic examples to get started in each genre of writing one encounters in Scripture.

The biography regarding Jacob Fugger (“ FOOgher” ) is definitely an engrossing shock. The wealthiest man the person lived is around as not even close a household label as can possibly be (outside regarding Germany). Steinmetz has offered him an exceptional summation in the blisteringly hectic bio.

Jacob Fugger a new headstart, becoming born right into a decently properly off category of textile dealers. He needed it a lot farther, learning to be a world class industrialist, mining silver antique, copper together with mercury, creating cannons with him or her, and conveying all over the world. He or she imported self defense from Of india, and wound up owning great tracts regarding land together with whole locations he could duty. He gained all these components either for some time or inside perpetuity in opposition to massive loan products to personal and spiritual leaders. Simply no one’ s i9000 credit appeared to be good enough to Fugger to be able to lend funds on their excellent name exclusively. As long as he or she kept to that particular principle, he or she prospered. Having been nearly required for when he as soon as second-guessed him self.

Along the way, Fugger founded the earth famous Switzerland Guards from the Vatican. He or she hired Switzerland mercenaries to patrol his investment decision there. He or she also came up with the first intercontinental news community. With his adult males posted all around the western world in the distribution sites, he acquired news ahead of politicians, nobleman, and the père. It provided him the unfair benefit in his talks and negotiations, a sort of early on insider stock trading. He obtained so much crucial news simply by courier that amounted for the first publication, the Foreign Herald Podium of the 15th century.

He designed the first multibranch, international financial network. This gave your pet the unique benefit of being able to offer you money exchanges without really shipping silver and gold coins or of these. He just simply moved statistics from one accounts to another.
Steinmetz provides a abundant, nicely comprehensive biography regarding Jacob. A person who reached great prosperity, wealth just about beyond that which we can even get pregnant today considering the times, together with affected most of how the country came about in the time and for that reason after.

To start with I have to admit Steinmetz produces biographies, at the least in this example of this, almost perfectly. He contains plenty of origin material although does not apply it as the key body of the entire like numerous do. Simply no lengthy offers page right after page which in turn reduces an e book into a cobbled together size of footnotes if you might. Instead you will find a wonderful story here in terms of a fascinating person who occupied some very fascinating days.

The different thing I seriously appreciated utilizing this type of biography would be that the author in addition does not employ sweeping extensive generalizations to be able to fill web pages. Too many days I read through biographies which have too much give attention to the general facets of life as opposed to detailing the niche. Many times seems like for filler injections. While Steinmetz perfectly records the times his / her subject occupied and his specific life, he or she wisely expectations Jacob’s capacity to gain together with use his / her wealth plus the wider personal canvas from the times. It can help that the days included the particular rise from the Hapsburg Disposition, the loan consolidation of the Speaking spanish Kingdom right into a world participant, the flick by the Ottomans further in Eastern The european countries, the ‘discovery’ and fermage of the ‘New World’. The list moves on.

In another author’s hands I do believe the pure mass regarding events together with players has been overwhelming. Right here though its tightly stiched and brief and yet practically nothing feels overlooked. I was, even though, sad to arrive at the end.
